If you want to replace your hard drive on Thinkpad T61, first of all, you should have the replacement harddisk first. The simple steps are described below in order to change the old HDD into the new one.
Steps on Changing Hard Drive
- Spot a screw that you need to unscrew.
- Take off the cover for the internal hdd bay.
- Pull on that black Mylar pull tab on the hdd, to remove it from the drive bay.
- Remove the two rubber railings on both side of the hdd drive (anti shock).
- There four screw that holds the old hdd in the makeshift anti-static caddy (you would need a Phillip screwdriver)
- After the screw is removed, replace the old hdd with the new one you bought.
Finishing Touch
After you have successfully replaced the hard drive, you should run the Recovery media discs (3 DVD) from startup discs and follow on-screen prompts. It should restore the recovery partition. After that, you should have a clean harddisk with no OS and laptop drivers. Install the operating system and necessary drivers. If you have created a rescue and recovery backup before and would like to restore them, just restore it to the original condition by choosing restore.
