If you happen to install SoundMax AD1888 on your Windows 7 but have problem because you heard no sound on Soundmax, we have this problem fixed. This usually happens when you are trying to upgrade XP or Vista to Windows 7 on Asus P5PE-VM.

This problems seems to be caused by a mismatch driver resides on your system. Our workaround involve Soundmax 5.12.01.3665 with Asus P4P800-SX and P5PE-VM so it might not work on other type and models. Just follow these steps to make your Soundmax working again:
- Remove previous sound drivers you have on your computer
- Restart your computer after you are done installing
- Go to your Windows Update settings and disable both automatic download and install
- Navigate your browser to Asus website and search for your motherboard type to get the drivers
- Download SoundMax drivers for Windows XP (should be 5.12.01.3665, don’t download anything other than this)
- Once it is downloaded, unpack the file with your favorite ZIP uncompressor
- Click on setup.exe but don’t run it
- Right click on the setup.exe and go to Properties
- Set it as Windows XP compatible
- Run the setup.exe to install the sound drivers on your computer
- Once it is done, restart your machine
If you know what you are doing, beside going into long steps, you can get the shortcut steps here:
- Copy smwdm.sys file (565KB) to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
- If asked, overwrite it
- Restart your machine
You might get a message telling you that you have a missing codec when you first run SoundMax (UI) on P5PE-VM on your Windows 7, but your sound device should be working fine by now.
