Chromium 64-bit Support on Ubuntu

Chromium has gained 64-bit support on Ubuntu. This open source Google Chrome web browser has build many fans on Linux platform, and decided to add compatibility for 64-bit system on Linux OS. Google software engineer Dean McNamee said that 64-bit compatibility had been achieved and the official builds will be available soon.

“The v8 team did some amazing work this quarter building a working 64-bit port. After a handful of changes on the Chromium side, I’ve had Chromium Linux building on 64-bit for the last few weeks,” he wrote. “I believe mmoss or tony is going to get a buildbot running, and working on packaging.”

Although the release build will be available soon, they are highly experimental and definitely not for common users. On 64-bit Ubuntu OS, the Chromium packages depended on ia32-libs. We are not going to need that anymore since it is built natively for 64-bit system. The Chromium browser is increasingly viewed as a strong competitor to Firefox, who has been a major Linux Web browser for years. Is this another Google domination strategy on another platforms, just like Android before?
