Black Screen of Death on Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop can happen if you have own your notebook for a couple of years now. This symptoms usually occurs when you are working on the notebook and suddenly the screen went black. No sound and no mouse cursor, but it is still on. After holding power button trying to restart, you will find another black screen. This annoying problems even getting worse when you see no Windows logo, no option to boot to safe mode, no loading screen, basically nothing happens.
This problem is very frightening and may need repairing on Dell support centre. If you suspect that the laptop is not very hot (this could make black screen), then the culprit must be the motherboard or graphic cards.
Draining Method
One examination of whether the problem is caused by the hot battery, you can try the following steps:
- Shutdown computer or hard shutdown by pressing power button on computer for a few seconds.
- Unplug power cable.
- Remove the battery.
- invert the computer and press and hold power button for 30 seconds. This will drain any remaining power. Now start and see if it starts. Otherwise try it again.
If you have following the steps above and not seeing any lights, etc or it still doesn’t start, it is certainly a GPU or Motherboard problem. It is a costly repair if your warranty expired, on the other hand if you still have your warranty, you’ll be safe.
