If it boots to a black screen, the MacBook is not displaying Apple logo illuminated on the back. However, when connected to a second display, it works but not when using it on primary screen.

At this point, you should contact Apple store to see if there is something wrong with your MacBook having black screen. If in the store it works fine, then it might be a faulty cable connecting to the second display which causes the problem. You can also check if it boots from the install DVD to check if there is a hardware problem before contacting Apple store. If it does, it might be the graphics circuit or screen causing black screen.
