BIOS supervisor password on Portege R500 can be entered with user level privileges. This is handy when you must go to BIOS to change the settings because you have installed Ubuntu and not being able to use the Windows Configuration utility to change the BIOS settings.

Superior priviliges is used to change the BIOS setting in R500. But you can enter the BIOS on user level if you can’t enter it on the screen. This is done by pressing Esc repeatedly and wait for message “Check system and press F1 to continue” comes up. Usually you can enter the BIOS setting by pressing F1 but with a user level you can’t change the settings.

While you’re on BIOS menu, you should follow these steps:

  1. Set your user level password to the same as the supervisor level password
  2. Save changes and exit
  3. Try to enter the BIOS again using the same method as before
  4. If you’ll be asked for a password just enter it

You should have supervisor privileges and have access to change the BIOS settings on Toshiba R500
